Louis Vuitton goes bold and masculine with its new Damier Graphite range for men. SYIDA LIZTA AMIRUL IHSAN joins six macho celebs for their rendezvous with LV.
ONE would think that with all the publicity showered upon him, superstar Mawi would have, by now, been accustomed to stares in public.
But when stylist Cheong Phin asked the reality show winner to walk into a restaurant packed with a lunch-time crowd so Cheong Phin could snap pictures of the diners gawking at him, Mawi frowned and asked wonderingly, “And what if no one looks at me?”
“Of course they will look at you. You are Mawi!” I told him.
And true enough, as he stepped into the dining area, diners looked up and forgot their meals.
Three women seated at a table asked to take a picture with him, to which he obliged.
Mawi (Asmawi Ani), 27, arguably the brightest star in the current Malay entertainment universe, joined five other male personalities for a photo shoot for Louis Vuitton Damier Graphite, a new range of bags and accessories for men.
Damier Graphite, is, quite simply, a darker, more masculine version of its much-loved Damier Canvas.
The dark and light brown checks of the Damier Canvas are now black and grey in Graphite. Cool and effortlessly versatile, the range breathes new life to Louis Vuitton’s durable canvas carriers.
The venue was the spanking new Delicious at Dua Annexe, an adjoining unit to Dua Residency, the prestigious apartment blocks along Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur.
The latest outlet has floor-to-ceiling glass, white furnishings and Delicious’s trademark white birdcages.
Actor, model and movie producer Craig Fong was the first to arrive. As he walked into the make-up room in his navy blue tank top and loose jeans, a backpack slung over his shoulder, we noted he had aged
very well.
Fong is 38 (which might as well be 83 in model years) and looks very good for his age. And, surprisingly, he said he is more sought-after now than he was 10 years ago.
“A lot of models my age have settled down and they don’t travel as much, so I end up getting roles of a young father or a businessman.”
Fong has just returned from Hong Kong, after shooting a BMW commercial for China, where he
said, there were not enough talents
of his age. “It’s easier to find
younger models.”
Next April, Fong will appear in a mini series on Astro called Wadi Unung, with actresses Siti Shahrizah (Eja) and Intan Azura.
Meanwhile, TV personality Owen Yap, 34, walked in wearing a crisp white shirt and jeans. I noticed a small, square bag slung on his shoulder. It was a Louis Vuitton carrier in Taiga leather.
And two minutes into the interview, Yap admitted that he has always been a fan of Louis Vuitton. He started buying its bags even as a student in Taiwan six years ago.
“I use this bag very often and I like it that it doesn’t age. It’s durable and sturdy,” said the friendly newscaster and host of TV show Deal or No Deal.
He has two other Louis Vuitton bags and two pairs of shoes plus a couple of accessories.
“But I have to say that I like my Louis Vuitton bags subtle and discreet. I don’t really like the Monogram Canvas print,” he said.
It turns out that all the other personalities have their own connection to the brand.
Singer Reshmonu and his wife Kavita are also customers. Mawi wore brown Louis Vuitton shoes in suede, one of four pairs he has.
“I can say one thing about Louis Vuitton. Its products may be expensive but they are worth buying because and last a long time,” said Mawi, who was clearly interested in the Damier Graphite messenger bag. (He already has one in Monogram Canvas.)
Mawi is now busy juggling work and his wedding preparations. He will be tying the knot before Christmas to his sweetheart, Ekin, or Nora Asikin Rahmat, and every day, he said, there’s something to do for the wedding.
The afternoon after the shoot, he was scheduled for another clothes fitting.
And that very day of the shoot was Ben Yong’s 32nd birthday.
“Yes, I have to work on my birthday,” he said, smiling.
Ben is the true Damier Graphite man, having bought a bag when the collection was first launched in August.
“It was an easy buy, and by that I mean, it’s not hard to resist. It’s practical and versatile,” he said.
The busy chief executive officer of the Delicious Group spends his time looking after Delicious, Reunion and D’lish restaurants.
His hands are full, with the opening of the new Delicious outlet in Dua Residency and before that, Marc Residence in Jalan Pinang.
And as if that hasn’t kept him occupied enough, Delicious is opening Ingredients on the ground floor of Dua Annexe, a fine foods store with a little café, with a menu based on the products sold in the shop.
And like Ben, who strives to do something different with each endeavour, singer Reshmonu also thrives on walking a different path.
Reshmonu, 32, whose real name is Hiresh Haridas, is now busy completing his first Malay album, to be released before year-end; one, which he said “is infused with Afro-Latin music”.
“I want to introduce something different to the music industry,” he said.
He recently set up a recording company called R Records and a talent management company called R Talents.
His studio is called Shugar and his video production company Shpice.
“I established my company to enable me to do things the way I want to do them. I will always be different and I am fine with it. People have asked me if the Afro-Latin thing will work but hey, if you don’t give it a try, you will never know.
Channel V VJ Joey G, 28, has also set up a company. Soundbox is a “digital musical provider”, and Joey’s band, Cosmic Space Monkeys, will release its new album next year.
And there they were: a hugely popular singer, a veteran model, a restaurateur, a TV host, a singer who wants to be different, and a music VJ, all bound, for one afternoon, by the Louis Vuitton Damier Graphite, a collection that is impeccably good-looking and superbly stylish.
The same could be said about the men.
