The show is being produced by Hiroyuki Goto. The script is being handled by Yasushi Fukuda, who has written for popular dramas such as "HERO" and "Galileo." Kensaku Sawada ("Saiyuki," "Hero Special") is directing.

Kimura Takuya stars as an elementary school teacher who spends fulfilling days surrounded by children. He has absolutely no interest in politics but, by a strange turn of events, finds himself dragged into the political arena because of certain circumstances and named the Prime Minister. Despite being made sport of by an odd twist of fate, he confronts problem-fraught Japanese politics and clashes with the wiley Nagata-cho politicians. The new Prime Minister is mindful of the sentiments of the common people, tackles everything from the viewpoint of man on the street, and fearlessly says he doesn't know when he doesn't understand something but his stance is also affected by his surroundings. The drama will also depict the gap between the political circle's conventional wisdom, called "Nagata-cho logic" and society. Fukatsu Eri teams up with Kimura again 6 years after Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi. She plays a capable secretary supportive of the inexperienced Prime Minister. She is an ambitious woman who graduated from a famous university and wants to change Japan but finds herself attracted to the Prime Minister's nature. TBS has announced a drama adaptation of the hit 2001 Korean movie "My Sassy Girl," which is known as "Ryokiteki na Kanojo" in Japan. The series will star SMAP's Tsuyoshi Kusanagi and actress Rena Tanaka.

The romantic comedy, which originally starred Cha Tae-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun, was highly successful in Korea, and its popularity quickly spread throughout the rest of Asia. Immediately following its release in Japan in 2003, multiple television networks reportedly began fighting over drama adaptation rights. However, it wasn't until Kusanagi was attached to the project that a deal was made this past spring.

The character backgrounds and plot details will be changed for the drama. While the protagonists in the original film were college students, this time the pair will be a marine biology professor (Kusanagi) and an aspiring writer (Tanaka).

Nao Matsu$hita, Emi Suzuki, Yoshie Ichige, Nahomi Matsushima, Shosuke Tanihara, and Takaya Kamikawa have also been announced as cast members.

Hidenori Iyoda is producing, and Yuji Sakamoto is handling the script. Filming already started earlier this month, with the series scheduled to premiere in April.

The network plans to start filming early next month. Katsuaki Setoguchi is producing, and the cast includes Naohito Fujiki, Nene Otsuka, and Michitaka Tsutsui. The drama will air on Fridays at 10:00pm, starting in April.

Last month, TBS announced that its Saturday 8:00pm time slot, which has long been reserved for variety shows, will be changing into a drama slot this spring. The network has now revealed that the first series in that block will be an adaptation of Masanori Morita's shonen manga "ROOKIES."

The story revolves around a high school teacher and coach that tries to reform delinquents by having them join the baseball team. The show will star Ryuta Sato as the coach, Koichi Kawato. He was reportedly chosen for the role by Morita himself.

The baseball team members include Hayato Ichihara, Keisuke Koide, and Yu Shirota. Filming begins in early March, and the series begins airing in April.

Unlike most dramas, however, TBS says that "ROOKIES" will not be confined by the seasonal programming rotation. The number of episodes has not yet been decided, but planner Akihiko Ishimaru stated that they are aiming to cover all 24 volumes of the original manga.

TBS is also collaborating with Yahoo! Japan to decide who will play the female lead, the team manager. Starting on February 18, the websites for both companies will allow public voting to determine which of the audition entrants gets the role.

NTV is producing a drama adaptation of Shota Kikuchi's "Osen" manga series, which currently runs in Kodansha's magazine Evening.

The drama will feature rising actress Yu Aoi in the lead role. Aoi has starred in several movies and currently stars in the WOWOW series "Yu Aoi x Yottsu no Uso: Camouflage," but this will be her first lead in a television drama on a major network.

Aoi plays Sen Handa, the "okami" (proprietress) of a long-standing restaurant in one of the lower parts of Tokyo. Though she is normally airheaded and loves to drink, she has an impressive mastery of a wide range skills, from cooking to ceramics to calligraphy. While the drama follows various events surrounding the restaurant, one of the series' highlights is its illustration of Japanese food and culture.

The next step in the comeback of former NEWS member Hiroki Uchi is his first regular drama series role in almost three years. He will appear in NTV's "Osen," which stars actress Yu Aoi as the "okami" of a long-standing Tokyo restaurant. This spring, NTV is adapting the manga series "Hokaben" as a live-action drama), starring Aya Ueto. Originally written by novelist/lawyer Hiroyuki Nakajima, the story deals with the growth of a novice lawyer.

The comic ran in Evening KC between 2003 and 2006, and is scheduled to resume in April. The protagonist is originally male, but producer Yoshio Yamamoto felt that a female character would get a better response from viewers.

Ueto plays Akari Domoto, an idealistic lawyer who wants to "rescue the weak." She joins a large law office, though she is assigned to a lowly department whose only other member is her boss, who was transferred there after making a mistake during a case.

While Ueto is known for her light-hearted characters in previous dramas, this series places her in a serious role.

NEWS member Shigeaki Kato has joined the cast of NTV's drama series "Hokaben," set to premiere on April 16. Adapted from a manga by Hiroyuki Nakajima, the show stars Aya Ueto as a novice lawyer.

Kato will play Riichiro Katase, an elite attorney who comes from a family of lawyers. Full of pride, ambition, and intelligence, he happens to work at the same law office as the idealistic rookie Akari (Ueto), whom he has been attracted to for a while.

Ueto and Kato previously appeared together in the sixth season of "3 Nen B Gumi Kinpachi Sensei," which ran from 2001 to 2002.

"Hokaben" will air on Wednesday nights at 10:00pm, starting in April.

This will be the first mystery drama for Ishihara. It is also her first role as a teacher, though the character is nothing like the "admirable" teacher roles in most dramas. The 21-year-old actress will be playing Misako Ayukawa, a woman in her 30s. Even though she is an English teacher, her English skills are poor. She values herself over her students, and money over love. She displays arrogance in front of her students, but acts pleasantly around her peers and family.

However, Ayukawa possesses a brilliant mind for solving puzzles. She ends up tackling various cases around the school along with 3 of her top students, played by Yusuke Yamamoto, Ryo Kimura, and Kento Nagayama (the younger brother of actor Eita).

The script is being written by Mitsuharu Makita, who worked on the "Trick" series. Filming already started earlier this month. The show starts in April, airing Fridays at 9:00pm.

Actress Shihori Kanjiya, who currently stars in NHK's morning drama "Chiritotechin," has been chosen for another starring role next season. She will appear in a TV Asahi mystery/comedy series, tentatively titled "Kimi Hannin Janai yo ne?"

"Chiritotechin" started filming last June and its final episode is scheduled to finish shooting on the 22nd of this month. Kanjiya will have little time to rest before she starts filming for the TV Asahi series in mid-March.

The drama features Kanjiya as Sakura Morita, a peculiar "freeter" (freelance part-timer) who dreams of becoming a mystery novel writer. While switching between various jobs throughout the series, she also becomes an assistant to Officer Utagawa (Jun Kaname), a detective who discovers her excellent memory and reasoning skills. On the other hand, Utagawa (who has just joined the police ranks through his father's connections) is fairly inept and has a tendency to fall in love with female suspects.

"Kimi Hannin Janai yo ne?" premieres in April and will occupy TV Asahi's Friday 11:15pm time slot, which has previously been the home of successful mystery series such as "Jikou Keisatsu" and "Trick."

Actress Yoko Maki has been given her first starring role in a drama series. The show, titled "Shukan Maki Yoko" ("Weekly Yoko Maki"), will air on TV Tokyo late on Wednesday nights (1:20am-1:50am). That slot is currently occupied by the "Mahou Sensei Negima!" live-action adaptation.

The drama is a collaboration with Shinchosha's "Gekkan Series," a popular set of monthly "mooks" (magazine-book hybrids) that each feature a different celebrity. Maki will be the 99th in the series (on sale February 13), and hers is photographed by Lily Franky.

For the television series, Maki will play a total of 12 different roles, such as a wife, a cabaret club hostess, and a high schooler. It has also been decided that Maki will perform the drama's opening theme song, marking her "debut" as a singer. The song will be included on the show's soundtrack.

Some big names are involved as staff. Lily Franky is writing the source material for the first episode, while Keishi Nagatsuka and Nobuhiro Yama#a will direct episodes 6 and 7, respectively.

Starting in April, TV Tokyo will broadcast a live-action adaptation of Kei Horito's manga "Hisho no Kagami," also known as "The Model of Secretary." It will air in the network's "Drama 24" time slot (12:12am on Friday nights).

The story revolves around a temp secretary named Yu Kagami who has no luck with finding a boyfriend. However, her true strength is her sense of justice. She faces off against various problems, such as the sexual harassment caused by her male co-workers and the incompetence of her company's president, who values his mistress more than the company.

TV Tokyo's drama adaptation of Kei Horito's manga series "Hisho no Kagami" (previously announced here) will start its broadcast on April 11. Talento Megumi Yasu has been given the starring role of Yu Kagami, a multi-talented temp secretary with a strong sense of justice. The character is described as being skilled in karate and aikido, so Yasu has taken up kickboxing to help her play the part.
