Moon Chae-won takes the lead in SBS drama
by javabeans | October 18, 2010 | 59 Comments
Moon Chae-wong has announced her next role, and it comes in a new SBS drama called It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl [괜찮아, 아빠 딸], which will be the station’s Monday-Tuesday offering after Dr. Champ wraps.
Moon plays Eun Chae-ryung, an immature youngest daughter who has always depended on her father, but after he is the victim of an accident and her household ruined, she realizes the extent of his sacrifice and hard work. This spurs a change in her careless attitude, and she encounters a series of hardships along the way as she transforms herself into a self-reliant woman.
The story has shades of a few dramas we’ve seen lately: namely Wish Upon a Star and Smile, You, which are coincidentally (or not?) also both SBS dramas. In Wish Upon a Star, the heroine was a flighty, boy-crazy 25-year-old who becomes the breadwinner for her five younger siblings after her parents die. In Smile, You, the heroine grew up in a rich household, but after her father’s business goes bankrupt, she finds herself in much humbler straits.
Still, even with these familiar elements, I’m looking forward to seeing Moon Chae-won take on a leading role and think there’s room enough in the premise for another version of this story. Moon is still a bit green as an actress, but she has a lovely, warm presence onscreen that makes me think she’d be an engaging leading lady. She’d had roles in high school fare like Mackerel Run and Our School E.T. (both with Park Bo-young and Lee Min-ho), but it wasn’t until 2008′s Painter of the Wind that she made her name known, playing a gisaeng who falls for the girl-in-man’s-clothing played by Moon Geun-young (the pair was even named best couple at the year-end awards). She followed that with a supporting role in Brilliant Legacy, after which she was pretty much wasted in Yoon Eun-hye’s My Fair Lady.
It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl will premiere on November 22.

The boys of It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl
by javabeans | October 24, 2010 | 47 Comments
Now that we know Moon Chae-won will head the upcoming SBS drama It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl, it’s time to turn our attention to the boys. All are relative newbies to the acting sphere, two of them coming from the idol-pop-star world (gulp), but let’s hope they surprise us with hitherto-untapped acting talent.
Daddy’s Girl features an immature young woman named Chae-ryung, played by Moon Chae-won, who’s forced to grow up when an accident throws her household into ruin.
Kim Tae-ho of Pasta (he was one of the good-looking trio, aka the “Italian Team,” and is pictured above) has been tapped as the lead, Choi Hyuk-gi. He’s a student at a prestigious law school who’s currently taking a leave of absence, and after he becomes entangled with Chae-ryung, they “develop a romance with difficulty.” But the difficulty is all a part of the drama fun, right?
Playing his rival in love is Ha Ji-won’s little bro Jeon Tae-soo, who by the way is already set to act in upcoming sitcom All My Love. That appears to be a supporting role, while he’ll take a more central role in this show as a character who tries to interfere with Hyuk-gi’s relationship with Chae-ryung. Jeon’s character is a friendly sunbae to Chae-ryung who grew up in a sheltered environment with parents who have their own successful law firm in the U.S. As a result, he doesn’t really know how to do anything for himself.
Jeon said that he feels some pressure playing another villain, but since there’s such a difference between a sageuk and a modern show, he’ll work hard to show a different side than he currently does as the scheming In-soo of Sungkyunkwan Scandal. He added, “Playing a villain means that I have to be hated in order to be called a good actor, so I intend to work hard to receive a lot of hate.”
Jeon Tae-soo
In addition to those two, we have two idol stars making their forays into acting. First up is Super Junior’s Donghae, who has actually appeared in a movie before — Attack on the Pin-up Boys, but I suppose that’s a bit of an odd situation since the movie starred most of the members of Super Junior and was produced by their management company, SM. Perhaps for that reason, this drama is being called his official acting debut.
He plays a character named Choi Wook-gi, who grew up poor but manages to make his way in life with a strong sense of responsibility and earnestness. While none of the press information has said as much, I presume from the name similarity that he will be the (younger?) brother to Kim Tae-ho’s character Hyuk-gi.
Then there’s Kang Min-hyuk of idol band CN Blue, who makes his drama debut playing the singer and drummer of a no-name band. His Yeon-doo character falls into a one-sided love for noona Chae-ryung.
Kang said, “I’m so happy to be meeting everyone through a drama for the first time. I know there are a lot of prejudices against singers who go into acting, so I’m working hard to do away with that impression through solid acting. I’m sure there will be areas where I’m lacking, but I hope you’ll watch with a favorable eye.”
Donghae
Last but not least: She’s not a boy, but rounding out the main cast of It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl is actress Choi Ja-hye (Baker King Kim Tak-gu, Jejoongwon). Her Hee-jae character is described as both a femme fatale and a perfect type — so what else is new? Oh, she also harbors inner pain. And I ask: Who doesn’t?
I suppose the Hee-jae character is being set up as a contrast to Chae-ryung, because she may be cool and chic on the outside, but she has grown up lacking parental love, in contrast to Chae-ryung. She starts out dreaming of revenge (because of whatever pain it is she carries with her), but realizes the meaning of real family through the man she loves.
The drama follows Dr. Champ on Mondays and Tuesdays, premiering November 22.

Character stills and preview for It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl
It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl is set to premiere on SBS (as soon as Dr. Champ ends this week), and is in the thick of filming. With rising star Moon Chae-won (Brilliant Legacy) in the lead and peppered with a hot (albeit inexperienced) young cast of idol singers, I’m hoping Daddy’s Girl proves to be a light, sweet watch.
The preview, which you can see below, suggests a range of tones, from lightly comedic to serious and dramatic. It starts out showing Moon Chae-won’s character’s close relationship with her father, who spoils her. (She sees him as a source of unending cash flow and pouts when he can’t come to a promised shopping trip with her.)
However, he gets into an accident where the other person dies, and that throws our heroine’s family into chaos. At the end of the preview, she says as though trying to convince herself, “It’s okay, Daddy’s Girl.” The rest of the drama will show her pulling herself back up and growing into a mature adult.
Based on this setup, It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl reminds me in a lot of ways of Wish Upon a Star, another SBS drama that aired in the same timeslot earlier this year. (This can be both a good and bad thing: Wish Upon a Star was incredibly uneven, especially because of that messy range of tone, but also very winning. If you fast-forwarded the boring side storylines, the rest was lots of hilarious fun.)
Below are stills of four of the boys in the cast, beginning with Jeon Tae-soo, who will probably be known for his villain’s role in Sungkyunkwan Scandal for a while yet. (At least it gives him a nickname other than “Ha Ji-won’s little brother,” although I wouldn’t expect people to stop calling him that anytime soon, either.) In Daddy’s Girl, Jeon trades his Joseon-era hanbok for expensive suits as he plays Moon Chae-won’s close sunbae. He’s a law student in the States and has grown up in a privileged household; it looks like he’ll be second lead. (There are a lot of boys in this cast so it’s a bit hard to tell for sure, but of the supporting roles, his looks the largest.)
Jeon seems to relish playing the villain, and said that he’s considering playing this character “even stronger than in Sungkyunkwan Scandal.” Oh god, do we have to fear him popping his eyeballs clear OUT of their sockets, then? (Sungkyunkwan actually made me like Jeon quite a lot, and I think he has potential, but he has definitely NOT yet found the best way to channel his energies into a complex, rounded performance. I hope he keeps growing in this one.)
One of a number of singer-actors involved in the drama is Kang Sung (a solo singer and member of two-man group Cerulean Blue), who plays the son of a famous hospital director. He won this role by advancing from open auditions, which is promising since that means he had to go through a series of auditions and beat out a number of other hopefuls. Although he’s not a well-known name, he has acted in a few projects before, including SBS sitcom Let’s Go and musical Sinbad.
Another singer-actor in the cast is Super Junior’s Donghae, whose photos here show his character at a construction site. His character comes from a poor background, and construction work is pretty much the Korean drama shorthand for poor man’s work. (It’s honest work but used as a last resort because it’s demanding, difficult labor. On the upside, it doesn’t require fancy prerequisites in order to be hired.)
Donghae’s dependable, good-guy character is the younger brother to the main lead of the drama, played by Kim Tae-ho of Pasta, who by the way has just changed his stage name to Choi Jin-hyuk. (What the heck, actors who are always changing your names? I was mightily confused for a while until I realized that Choi Jin-hyuk and Kim Tae-ho were the same person.)
Choi, who is in his first leading role here, plays a poor law student who is currently on a leave of absence of school. In the last stills below, the two brothers grieve in a mourning scene.
It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl will premiere on Monday, November 22.
