France vs Argentine
Argentina could cause the biggest upset of the tournament by beating the French, but that is dependant on what form they are in. They haven't had the best preparation; but at the last World Cup they proved themselves by beating the French.
A lot of the Argentinian players have played in France for the last couple of years, like Pichot Augustin and Felipe Contepomi. It makes a huge difference - this will be the most dangerous game for France. They need to get off to a good start and if France can beat Argentina and get on a roll that will set them on their way for the rest of the World Cup.
The Argentinians are not renowned for their scrummaging. They are very strong up front, but I think with the French flair and if they can play at a high tempo and are very physical up front it could change the dimension of the game for France and give them the opportunity to dominate.
They need to get in their opponents' faces, get the ball moving quickly and get their confidence up because once the French are confident with their own crowd at home in the opening game of the World Cup, they'll want to send a statement out to the rest of the world that they are here in their home ground and are not willing to lose to any team.
I think the key is that whoever dominates in the forwards is going to win the game because both teams are very physical. France have to dominate and let the likes of Christophe Dominici loose. They are going to open up and let them run. Guys like Rougerie can be physical in the game but also run, while Dominici, if you give him an opening, will finish.
You will see some flair and some style in the way they play but they will be clinical because they know to beat Argentina, but they must put points on and put them on early.
How the game is refereed is also important. If it is an open or flowing game, will they let it continue like that? I guess that is dependant on the players as well. If it's hard for the forwards up front, it could be like that [forward-dominated rather than free-flowing].
But that happens in rugby: you must dominate up front. It doesn't matter what game plan you play, if your forwards are not dominating up front you are not going to be able to play the way you want.
I think I will go with France to win this game, but I think it will be a lot closer than people think. The Argentinians won't give up as they have some great players, but I think France should win this game.
If you go on records, there will be a difference of about four to five points.
