The current craze for scrap metal parts could have disastrous results for train passengers.
The theft of 75 "fish plates" along a 250-metre stretch of railway track near Kampar on Sunday could have led to a derailment if not for alert KTMB staff.

Three goods train drivers lodged reports with the KTMB office here after feeling the shaking of coaches on passing the affected stretch.

KTMB officials later lodged a police report on the matter. Perak police chief Datuk Asari Mokhtar said it was lucky that the goods trains had not been fully loaded and that the matter was reported before passenger trains passed.

"The theft was an irresponsible act as the missing fish plates could have caused a derailment and lives could have been affected,'' he said.

A fish plate is a metal or wooden plate bolted to the sides of two abutting rails or beams used especially in the laying of railroad tracks.

Asari said the plates, which weighed a kilogramme each, were stolen with their bolts and nuts.

He warned scrap metal dealers against buying such plates as they would be guilty of being in possession of stolen property.

Asari said he had asked district police chiefs to assist KTMB patrol the railway lines to ensure that other fish plates were not stolen.

It is believed the thieves could have carted away the plates in lorries as they were too heavy to be carried on foot.

A check at the area today revealed that the stolen plates had been replaced.

Thieves have got away with copper wire from the tracks, manhole covers, iron grilles from homes and metal signboards.

Title: KISAH DARI MUZIUM.
Dunearn road vs Tank Rd

Dunearn road is abt 6 km further up (SE) of BT Station.

Tank road is located at Cuppage (Orchard Rd today), the remains of the pillars supporting line I think is still there but used for pipelines and electtrical cables.

Tank Rd had never existed in my visual experiences. Suggest refer to PICAS.

The bride in PICAS is somewhat smaller and similar to the ones perhaps at Jurong?

Distance between these places 2 are world's apart geographically.

The above pix is the lower view (slope) of the BT Station. There are ONLY 3 of these KTM bridges in Singapore and 2 are found along Bt-Upper BT road.

Photograph 181 above was taken from the old Damansara Road bridge (now Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin) which crossed the main north bound track just south of the present National Museum, before the track was diverted away from the Selangor Club and relaid further west along Jalan Tugu. The ornate building in the left background (built 1896) still stands at the corner of Jalan Sultan Hashmuddin and Lebuh Pasar Besar (formerly Market Street), at the south east corner of Merdeka Square in central KL. The same bridge can also be clearly seen in middle right of photograph 251, "Railway Goods Yard Kuala Lumpur".

In fact in 1990, i have walked along the track on jurong line from bukit timah station to jurong station (a small station), suprisingly i saw a class 24 with a brake van crossing the 1st level-crossing there into the 2nd branch. at that time the point to that branch is still intact. now the line is cover with brush, not quit possible to walk again and point removed. i have photos of that, will scan it up when i got my scanner back.

the level-crossing to PSA is my favourite location, before kepple road re-alignment in 1985 for AYE. too bad i did not have a clear picture of the old depot (which is now the AYE). my office is very near to the brickwork branch at bukit merah, the empty strip of field is still visible (behind IKEA). the woodland branch is now the exact site of the road. 2 years ago, i have found a very small brick abutment across a stream which i think is for the railway bridge when at that time the line ends at pasir panjang.

recently the widening of the road (for the overhead bridge) construction had it demolished before photos were taken. i am actually studying old map to locate the exact location of the ayer rajah branch near tanglin station which i think it crosses portsdown road. i am about to finish the web site about s'pore mass transit, have not post it up yet. Malaysia rail web page is currently 'in construction'...

1914 - Kerja menyukat tanah selesai.

Title: Sejarah Keretapi Di Perlis Part 2

Title: Sejarah Keretapi di Perlis Part 3

Title: KTM Semasa Zaman Darurat
Author: jofizo    Time: 7-10-2005 12:22 PM

Serangan pengganas komunis kemudiannya menjadi reda sehinggalah akhir Darurat Pertama.

KTM Berhad Video

This video briefly features the colourful history of the Malaysian Railway, from its inception as tin-ore transportation in colonial Perak to the usage of diesel locomotives and eventually, the graduation to the electric Komuter train.  The footages and stills date way back to the 19th and 20th century, with some exclusive pictures taken during the British colonial era and the Japanese insurgency.

Author: ligor    Time: 19-12-2005 10:45 AM
KTM Komuter

KTM Komuter started revenue services as the first electric rail service in Malaysia on 14 August 1995 between Kuala Lumpur and Rawang. The service was later expanded to cover 153 route-km of electrified double track between Rawang and Seremban, and Sentul and Port Klang (Pelabuhan Klang). The KTM Komuter network has 40 stations including the new KL Sentral Station (Fig. 1). The electrification system consists of a 25-kVac catenary with six substations drawing power from Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the national power company.
The meter-gauge track with multiple aspect signalling allows trains to run at up to 120 km/h. KTM Komuter uses three-car electric multiple units (EMUs) from three different suppliers桱enbacher Transportation System (18 sets), Marubeni Corporation (22 sets) and Union Carriage and Wagons (22 sets). The EMUs have the automatic train protection (ATP) system, which monitors the train speed and applies the brakes automatically if the driver fails to respond. This safety feature permits one-man operation, which had never been used before in Malaysia.
KTM Komuter's 215 daily services start at 05:30 and stop at 24:00. Services run at a headway of 15 minutes during the morning rush from 05:30 to 09:30, and this frequency is also maintained during the evening peak from 15:30 to 20:00. The service frequency is reduced to one train every 30 minutes at other times.
To ensure efficient ticketing, KTM Komuter uses an automatic fare collection (AFC) system with ticket vending machines (TVMs), automatic gates and magnetic-strip tickets. Although the AFC system has a closed-system design, KTM Komuter faces some problems, especially where the railway fences have been breached by villagers for illegal crossing of tracks. To control fare evaders, KTM Komuter employs roving ticket inspectors to make spot ticket checks.
At present, KTM Komuter carries about 64,000 passengers daily, 61% of whom are young people between 19 and 29. It is also carrying increasingly more white-collar passengers than when it started. KL Sentral, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Bank Negara, Serdang, Seremban, and Kajang stations have high ridership because they are either in densely populated residential areas or are situated close to government offices or commercial buildings. KL Sentral is the biggest connecting station where passengers can transfer between LRT, ERL and intercity trains.
Although located 73 km from KL, Seremban Station collects high revenues because it serves many commuters. Property in and around Seremban is cheaper than in KL and its suburb, so some people are willing to spend more time commuting to enjoy the advantages of larger houses. This trend is expected to continue with more property development occurring further from the city but closer to commuter lines. A similar phenomena will probably occur in the north when commuter services are extended to Tanjung Malim.
To cater for long-distance commuters, KTM Komuter operates two express services in the morning from Seremban to KL, and two express services from KL back to Seremban in the evening. They make only three stops, reducing the journey time from 1 hour 15 minutes to exactly 1 hour.
To increase peak capacity, especially over the section between Sentul and Port Klang, two three-car sets are coupled together to form a six-car set with only one driver. Three six-car services run during the morning and evening peak hours.
KTM Komuter caters for various travel requirements with various types of tickets. In addition to the normal single and return tickets, regular users can buy 12- and 24-trip tickets at 20% discount. Regular travellers using a monthly season ticket enjoy a 33% discount. To encourage people to travel during off-peak times, the Tiket Mana-Mana pass entitles the holder to unlimited travel anywhere on the network on any weekday after 09:00. It costs just MYR6.00 (MYR1.00 = US$0.26). A similar Tiket Kembara day pass for weekends and public holidays costs MYR10.00. It is more expensive than the weekday pass because many people use KTM Komuter at weekends for leisure, shopping, visiting friends and returning to their hometowns. In line with the government intention to create common ticketing, KTM Komuter will be installing contactless Touch'n Go smart card readers in 2003, giving passengers the choice of using a normal KTM Komuter ticket or a prepaid contactless Touch'n Go smart card that is also accepted by the STAR and PUTRA LRTs, buses and toll highways.
Commuter services have affected property development around commuter stations. When commuter services first started, most stations could only be accessed from one side. However, development of housing estates and commercial properties around stations has required the opening of second access points. The need for better access and links with bus stops and other transport modes like taxis has required construction of covered walkways, etc. Popular stations like Seremban, Kajang, Serdang and Sungai Buloh also need larger car parks.
Property development near commuter lines has created new markets. KTMB identified a few locations such as Mid Valley, Sri Damansara and Seremban Two for construction of new stations to meet increasing demand. The most attractive site is at Mid Valley where there is a mega-shopping complex as well as a hotel, offices, and condominiums. This new station is expected to be completed in mid-2004. Currently, KTMB is constructing an electrified double track between Rawang and Ipoh. When completed in 2005, services will run 55 km further north to Tanjung Malim with five additional stations from Rawang.

This project will also include rapid train services with new train sets between KL Sentral and Ipoh. Another big project in the pipeline that should be completed in 2006 is the double-tracking and electrification of a 7.2-km extension from Sentul to Batu Caves, passing through new stations at Batu Kentonmen, Kg. Batu and Taman Wahyu. The extension will serve a new Sentul Station that will be built for the joint-venture Sentul Raya property development on the site of a former railway central workshop

HISTORY OF MUAR STATE RAILWAY (1889-1925)

Muar is the biggest and most important district under the Johor empire and the first to be significantly developed by Johor. Parit Jawa is an important area under Muar where are community there plant gambir, coconut, pinang and other commercial plant during the 19th century.

Journey from Parit Jawa to Muar town in those days were difficult. Travellers by sea or river are exposed to pirate attacks, while there are no proper roads being built between the two places.

In 13th. November 1887, the Johor government solved this problem. A discussion was held between Residen Ungku Sulaiman and Dato' Bentara Luar who at that time was the head for the Land Office and Agriculture Affairs of Muar district.

An agreement was reached in this discussion where railway will be constructed in early 1889 with the objective to service the population at the south of Muar town and improve transportation of goods. It is also to provide free transportation for school children who went to English school in Muar town.

The construction of this railway was done mostly by Malay and Javanese workers who migrated in masses to the Malay peninsular. Most of these Javanese immigrants do not have permanant job and their pay was cheap. Between 1889 - 1890 was the initial stage of the construction work if this railway. All materials were supplied from Europe.

The triain has a steam engine and the seating coach were arrange facing each side. There ten coaches. Five for passenger and three coaches for carrying goods. The passenger coaches were divided into first class, second class and third class which was always full. There were other facilities. Each pessenger were charged five sen per mile.

The railway starts from Jalan Sulaiman in Muar town to Parit Jawa in 1890. In 1894, the railway was extended another three miles until Sungai Pulai. The railway services five times a day.

There were five permanant stations and eight temporary stations along the railway.

Permanant stations:

1. Bandar Maharani, Muar

2. Parit Bakar

3. Parit Jawa

4. Parit Pecah

5. Parit Pulai

Temporary stations:

1. Parit Perupok

2. Parit Keroma

3. Parit Raja

4. Parit Unas

5. Parit Samsu

6. Parit Jamil

7. Parit Bulat

8. Parit Seri Menanti

The railway service was very profitable. The main factors that contribute to the profitability was because of the two types of service coaches, increase in economic activities and sea transportations were stopped.

In 1915, income for Muar State Railway reached RM86,701.92 compared to estimated expenditure of RM63,216.77.

With this positive development, His Mejesty Sultan Johor suggested to extend the railway service until Batu Pahat river but it was not done due to financial reasons and geographical condition. There were a lot of soft ground along the way, it had to be piled every time the train pass through the area resulting increase in expenditure.

Profitability began to reduce when the engine is getting old and the high cost incurred in maintaining the railway and stations. With the opening of a road called Jalan Abdul Rahman from Maharani town to Parit Jawa, the Muar State Railway ceased its operation in 1925.

KTMB kaya artifak sejarah

Oleh Riadz Radzi
[email protected]

PELANCARAN PERKHIDMATAN PERTAMA JOHORE STATE RAILWAY

Tarikh Peristiwa: 01.07.1909
