Actors Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Jo Jin Woong have been confirmed for tvN‘s new drama “Signal.”
Previously, it was reported that Lee Je Hoon was castin the drama as its lead. Today, it was announced that Kim Hye Soo and Jo Jin Woong, two of the Korean film industry’s hottest stars, have been cast in the drama as well. This drama will be the first tvN drama for all three actors.
“Signal” will be a mystery fantasy drama about detectives of the present time communicating with a detective of the past through an old walkie to solve unsolved crime cases. It will be directed by “Misaeng” and “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” director Kim Won Seok. The script will be penned by screenwriter Kim Eun Hee, known for writing acclaimed dramas like “Sign,” “Three Days,” and “Ghost.”
“Signal” will premiere in January of 2016.

Here’s our first look at tvN’s Signal, the paranormal police drama from the PD of Misaeng and the writer of Ghost and Sign. It’s about cops both past and present who can communicate with one another via two-way radio, and how they use this unique situation to crack long-unsolved cases. The teaser introduces us to our main cast — Lee Je-hoon (Secret Door), Kim Hye-soo (God of the Workplace), and Jo Jin-woong (Full Sun) — and gives us glimpses of their past and present in bits and pieces.
Lee Je-hoon stars as a bad boy cop in the present-day timeline. He was a rebellious teen who had such terrible experiences with authority figures that he hated any and all cops (the flashes to his childhood in the teaser have him wreaking havoc in a police station and getting into fights). It’s a wonder that he became a cop himself then, but I suppose that’ll be the interesting thing about his character. He’s still got that rebel streak in him, and in order to make ends meet, he sells tips to celebrity news outlets. He’s greatly wasting his talents, until one day an old radio that was in storage starts to ring.
Kim Hye-soo is a dogged detective with 15 years’ experience in homicide, whose one real weakness is her terrible temper. She’s famous for losing her cool and constantly gets into trouble because of it, eventually landing herself on the long-term unsolved cases task force alongside Lee Je-hoon. Meanwhile, Jo Jin-woong is a cop from the past who’s missing in his own timeline and exists only inside the two-way radio.
Weeeeird. Is he a ghost? Still alive and desperate to be found? How’d he get trapped in there? The show sounds so normal until you get to his character, and suddenly it’s so supernatural. Jo Jin-woong is the one who calls Lee Je-hoon through this mystical radio, sending all three characters after unsolved cases. The teaser’s tagline is: “A signal sent through desperation.” Where’s MY two-way radio that calls Lee Je-hoon when I need him?
Signal follows Answer Me 1988 on Fridays and Saturdays in late January.

New tvN thriller to pick up where 'Reply 1988' left off

SEOUL, Jan. 14 (Yonhap) -- With only two episodes left in tvN's "Reply 1988" series, all eyes are on the program that will take over the cable network's Friday and Saturday night time slots after the popular soap opera concludes this weekend.
"Signal" is of an entirely different genre than the episodic, family drama of "Reply 1988." In the upcoming crime thriller, two detectives at present and another from the past communicate via walkie-talkie to solve cold cases.
"Reply 1988," which captivated South Koreans of all ages and generated millions of dollars in profit, would no doubt be a hard act to follow, but "Signal" producer Kim Won-seok says he's not too worried.

"Worrying doesn't help anyway, I think," Kim told reporters at a press conference in Seoul. Kim directed "Misaeng," tvN's office drama sensation from 2014. "I worked really hard on 'Misaeng,' but I never thought many people would like it. It's the same with 'Signal.' I don't mind if the show doesn't match 'Misaeng''s success as long as I'm not embarrassed by it."
Despite their obvious differences, "Signal" and its predecessor "Reply 1988" have a lot in common, Kim said.
"Those who loved watching 'Reply 1988' value family and yearn for the more humanistic past. Our show won't be too alien to them," he said. "Even though 'Signal' has a different approach, it drives home the same message as that of 'Reply 1988.'"
"Signal" stars actor Lee Je-hoon from the 2012 romance movie "Architecture 101," veteran actress Kim Hye-soo and actor Cho Jin-woong from the 2012 crime movie "Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time." Cho plays the role of a deceased detective who communicates with his former colleagues Park Hae-young (Lee) and Cha Soo-hyeon (Kim) through a radio transceiver.
The pilot episode airs on Jan. 22.
