AOA’s Seolhyun Beats Competition 500:1 to Join Lee Min Ho and Kim Rae Won in Film “Gangnam Blues”
Following last week’s reports that AOA member Seolhyun auditioned for “Gangnam Blues,” it has been confirmed today that the idol-actor will definitely be joining the film.
Seolhyun was one among many other idols and young actors to audition for the movie, with the competition rate of 500:1. She will play the role of Sun Hye, the figurative younger sister of the lead male in the movie. Sun Hye is like a younger sister to the hero, Jong Dae, who grew up as an orphan. Sun Hye is family to Jong Dae, who struggles to protect her until the very end. Actor Lee Min Ho has already been cast as Jong Dae, who is described a tragic hero.
“Gangnam Blues” is a noir set in the 197os, right at the start of the real estate boom and development of the Gangnam area, and covers the story of conflict between the government and other darker organizations in their struggle to gain control and influence. Directed by Yoo Ha, it is expected to hit theaters late this year. It is currently in the final round of casting and will begin filming soon.

Would you like the chance to call Lee Min Ho oppa? Lucky Kim Sul Hyun will get the chance in the upcoming film "Gangnam Blues," also known as "Land Gate, Gangnam 1970." In that film she will play Kim Sun Hye, the younger sister of Kim Dong Jae, played by Lee Min Ho.
While playing his younger sister may not be as appealing to some actresses as playing his love interest, 18-year-old Kim Sul Hyun can still consider herself fortunate. She will soon join the short list of actors who played Lee Min Ho's onscreen siblings. That list includes Kim Hyun Joo in "Boys Over Flowers" and Choi Jin Hyuk in "The Heirs."
And she has something in common with the popular actor. It will be the first film role for both of them.
Although Kim Sul Hyun is best known for being in the eight-member girl group AOA, she does have some acting experience. She appeared as Gong Na Ri in "Ugly Alert" in 2013 and as Seo Eun So in "My Daughter Seo Young" in 2012.She is also set to play Lee Da Bae in the upcoming drama "Hotel King" with Lee Dong Wook and Lee Da Hae.
Kim Sul Hyun debuted with the group AOA in 2012. This year they came back with a new sexy concept and released their fifth single album. For that album they released a music video titled "Miniskirt," which was produced by Brave Brothers, ElephantKingdom and Galactikia. The song reached #1 on the online Korean music charts on the day it was released. Last month they celebrated their first win on the SBS music show "Inkigayo".
"Gangnam Blues" is the story of the wheeling and dealing that took place over land development in the now fashionable Gangnam area during the 1970s. Described as a "gangster noir" film, it will highlight the struggles between organized crime and politics for influence in the area.
Kim Sul Hyun was one of 500 actresses and singers who tried out for the part. She looks as if she could be Lee Min Ho's sister and that was definitely a casting plus for this movie. Director Yoo Ha knew that he wanted Lee Min Ho to play a leading role from the start.
"Although several actors were interested, I had Lee Min Ho in mind for a long time while planning this production," said Yoo Ha. "I anticipate that his charisma, looks and individuality will contribute a lot to the film."
Filming is set to begin in April.

Lee Min-ho is gearing up for his new movie Gangnam Blues, the ’70s action noir about the shady dealings behind the real estate development of Gangnam. He now has a co-star inKim Rae-won (My Little Hero), who has signed on to play his friend who becomes his greatest rival. Whoo. It’s a little jarring for Lee Min-ho to go from playing a high-schooler to a gangster and Kim Rae-won’s friend, but I’m all for graduating. On to bigger and better things!
The movie is the next project from director Yoo Ha of Once Upon A Time in High School andDirty Carnival, and tells the Friend-esque tale of two buddies who become enemies in a dirty power struggle. The noir action thriller will focus on the movers and shakers in the shadows behind the 1970s real estate boom of Gangnam—the dirty money and gangster dealings on the dark side of the struggle for political power and ultimately wealth.Lee Min-ho plays the tragically-fated hero who plays a key role in shifting the power dynamic of the district. Kim Rae-won plays his childhood friend and the two naturally end up in opposing organizations later. Cue music of epic broken bromance here. This is totally beside the point, but does anyone else think that the ’70s gangster suits will actually be a step up from Lee Min-ho’s parade of atrocious duds in Heirs?
