KUALA LUMPUR: BAE Systems has concluded an agreement with SME Aerospace (SMEA) Sdn Bhd, a premier metal-based aerospace parts manufacturer in Malaysia, for the manufacture of additional pylons for the Hawk advanced jet trainer. The pylons, which include 16 inboard and 16 outboard fittings, are being manufactured for a key BAE Systems’ export customer, the global defence, security and aerospace company said in a statement today.BAE Systems Southeast Asia Managing Director John Brosnan said the company is committed to invest in Malaysia and deliver long-term sustained benefits through local partnerships. He said has an excellent track record in manufacturing pylons for Hawk aircraft and it is pleased with the continued manufacture and export of the key components by the Malaysian company.SMEA has manufactured over 600 Hawk pylons for BAE Systems since 1992.In separate statement, BAE Systems said it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the British High Commission in Malaysia to support the Chevening Scholarship programme for the fourth year. The MoU was signed at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2015 yesterday by British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell and BAE Systems Combat Air Managing Director Martin Taylor. The UK government’s global scholarship scheme offers students to undertake a one-year master’s degree in a number of fields, including engineering, in the UK.Brosnan said education represents one of the most long-standing and successful bilateral ties between the UK and Malaysia.“We believe that education paves the way for young people to become responsible and innovative citizens, forming the foundation of a stronger nation,” he said, adding that BAE Systems has so far sponsored 35 students. -- BERNAMA

AIROD MIG-29NM
The aircraft proposed by Airod's Aerospace Technology Systems Corporation, in conjunction with Malaysia's Sukhoi Technical Centre, would receive a new high-resolution, fire-control radar; improved cockpit ergonomics; and better avionics, while the type’s airframe life would be extended to 6,000h from the current 4,000h.
In addition, the aircraft would have greater commonality with Malaysia’s fleet of Su-30MKMs. The work would be done in Malaysia under licence from RAC MiG.

LIMA 2015: Round Up
By Marhalim Abbas
SHAH ALAM: LIMA 2015 closed its doors on Saturday (March 21, 2015) and probably you have heard or read that it was “the best” ever. Such description are of course subjective, and its up to you all readers to make your opinion whether it deserved such accolade.
To me it was not. For starters there were too many things happening at the same time when LIMA itself is already hectic in the first place. As Malaysian Defence remained a one man show at the moment, I did not even had the time to go the Maritime section.
In fact it wasn’t just me who had to struggle throughout the show even my colleagues in the main stream media faced the same story. However as they had a bigger latitude in the type of stories they can report on made it much simpler for them. It’s not that I am complaining about my beat but it will better for future LIMAs if there wasn’t other things to distract the attention unless of course it was the intention in the first place.

MRCA: Updates, Sort Off
By Marhalim Abbas
SHAH ALAM: YES its a week after LIMA, I am only starting to write about the MRCA programme . It is just to show there is not much really moving on the MRCA even at the country’s premier airshow. Three of the MRCA candidates were present at LIMA 2015 but only the Dassault Rafale took part in the flight displays. In the exhibition hall and corporate chalets, however, all was relatively quiet.
Well some may argue that the offer from Dassault, the same financial package to Malaysia like those for Egypt was the big news from Langkawi. And what about the offer from ATSC to upgrade the Fulcrums to the NM standard then?
