THE Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) ship KD Mutiara is believed to have suffered more than 80 per cent damage due to the ferocity of a fire that broke out on the vessel on Thursday night.
A total of 60 firemen and 12 fire engines took about four hours to contain the blaze at the Malaysian Marine Heavy Engineering (MMHE) shipyard here after it broke out at 7.30pm that day.
By 3.30am yesterday, the fire was fully extinguished. There were no casualties.
The fire was believed to have spread rapidly unnoticed due to the many compartments of the 35-year-old vessel which was gazetted for the navy's hydrographic and oceanography work.
Johor Baru Fire and Rescue Department zone chief Raja Saiful Iswandi said the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Department, which comes under the Johor Baru zone, received a distress call at 8pm.
"Two fire engines arrived within 10 minutes after receiving the distress call, followed by additional fire engines and firemen from the Johor Baru and Johor Jaya stations upon learning of the extent of the blaze," he said yesterday.
Raja Saiful, who was involved in coordinating the operation, said the MMHE also had an emergency response team that assisted in fighting the fire before the arrival of the firemen.
However, he said, the fire had already spread by the time most of the firemen arrived at the scene.
Raja Saiful said firemen were hampered in fighting the blaze due to the many compartments and confined spaces which became hot spots in the ship.
"We have yet to determine the cause of the fire," he said, adding that the department was still investigating and searching for clues.
Meanwhile, MMHE, in a statement issued yesterday, said KD Mutiara had been docked in the shipyard for repair work and refurbishment which was scheduled to be completed in May.
"KD Mutiara suffered damage to the front portion of the ship and the cost of the damage is still being assessed," the statement said.
Attempts to contact RMN officials on the incident were unsuccessful.
KD Mutiara, measuring 71m in length and 13m in width, was commissioned in 1977, to carry out mapping and general oceanography.
The ship, is a non-combat vessel, is equipped with digital data gathering and processing systems, modern acoustic sensors and differential satellite position-fixing systems.

Image dah banyak kali tercalar.
Last year.................seoghang dah jatuh mati dari scaffolding.
Since MMHE adalah syarikat besar di Malaysia, ghaser teman banyak kes seghoper ini di sapu di bawah carpet.
Alasan kerja kerja seperti ini di sub sub kat kontraktor laen tidak bley di terima.
Setiap sub contractor yg bekerja di bawah MMHE adalah tanggungjawab MMHE utk memastikan deme mematuhi undang2 keselamatan.
Salam no hal la, mana2 negara pernah ada kejadian semacam ni, termasuk di indonesiagak pernah ada kejadian kapal perang terbakar semasa dlm perbaikan di dockyard..
BTW MMHEni termasuk syarikat gomen ke syarikat swasta?kenape tak di baiki oleh BNS?
boleh ke sebuah aset strategik cam kapal perang di baiki di syarikat swasta? apa yg sy tahu military workshop/syarikat khusus hal military biasanya engineer dan pekerjanya dah certified dan jugak tahap keselamatannya (safety) pun tidak sembarang jika dibandingkan gan dockyard swasta. no hal la, mana2 negara pernah ada kejadian semacam ni, termasuk di indonesiagak pernah ada kejadi ...

masa zaman aku sekolah dulu,
lebih kurang 10 org mati terbakor kat MMHE,
masa kerja baik pulih kapal tanker..
aku tak ingat bila.. tapi area tahun 90-an gitu ikut laporan segala peralatan sensitif dh dkeluarkan sblum kerjax dlakukan,pihak syarikat spatutny ...

Dalam hal ini, kita tidak bley salahkan fihak NAVY.
Yg membuat baik pulih itu adalah MMHE.
Mereka lah yg bertanggungjawab.
Masaalahnya MMHE ini selalunya dok sub-con jer kat oghang laen.
Ada ratusan sub-con bekerja dgn MMHE pada satu satu masa.
Kualiti HSE deme bley di pertikaikan/meragui.
Salam Dalam hal ini, kita tidak bley salahkan fihak NAVY.
Yg membuat baik pulih itu adalah MMHE.

Dalam SAFETY, kita tidak pernah pertikaikan kerojer oghang.
Haper yg kita mahu ialah.............tiada lagi berlaku kemalangan di tempat kerojer berulang.
Finger pointing tiada di dalam kamus SAFETY.
Yang penting ialah mengenal pasti ROOT CAUSE dan perkemaskan SOP serta WAY FORWARD.
Ini lah kaedah yg dapat menaiktarafkan perkhidmatan/kerojer seseoghang/syarikat.
Next month teman akan mesyuarat dgn MMHE, insyaallah.
Mungkin lebey banyak dapat info.

Sebenornya teman udah tepon pung kenkawan bahagian Safety kat MMHE pd ari di laporkan KD Mutiara terbakar.
Laporan dr dier mengatakan kemungkinan besor ialah HOUSE KEEPING bagi fihak MMHE.
