(Bernama) - LUMUT: The government has agreed to allocate RM6bil to build six second generation patrol vessels for the Royal Malaysian Navy, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Saturday.
The construction of the ships would boost the economy while benefiting 632 vendor companies, he told reporters here after a briefing on the project.
"Thus, we will ensure that at least RM2bil of the allocation will benefit these vendor companies which are strategic partners of Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd," he added.
Ahmad Zahid said that he would himself monitor the progress of the project, due to start next year, and ensure that all concerned benefit from it and that there was no delay in paying the vendors.
He said that Boustead Naval Shipyard had constructed several new generation vessels for the RMN and shown itself to be on par with other ship builders in the world.
Ahmad Zahid also said the Lumut-Bagan Datoh coastal area here has been identified for a world-class shipyard to be developed over the next 10 to 20 years.
He said the defence industry, including shipping, had immense potential in the Asean region and now generated income of US$25bil (RM75bil) a year.
If Malaysia could attract at least 20 percent of the defence spending, US$5bil or RM15bil could be generated by companies in the country, he said.

Boustead wins patrol vessel job
KUALA LUMPUR: Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd’s subsidiary, Boustead Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (BN Shipyard), has received a letter of intent from the Defence Ministry to undertake the construction of six second-generation patrol vessels with combatant capabilities.
The value and duration of the project were to be negotiated with the Government, the group said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
The contract for the Littoral Combatant Ship (LCS) would have no material effect on the group’s earnings for the financial year ending Dec 31, 2010, but would contribute positively to future earnings, it said.
“The new contract to build the LCS is a reflection of the Government’s confidence and trust in our ability to deliver on obligations.
“As we have been engaging the Government on the technical and commercial packages of the project for some time, we are confident that the contract can be concluded early,” said BN Shipyard managing director Tan Sri Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor.
“Being full combatants, the vessels will require additional technology, some of which we will acquire while others will be developed in partnership with defence industry players,” he said.
Ahmad Ramli said the LCS project was expected to beef up the participation and development of local vendors, in line with the 60% local content targeted, for the project. — Bernama

Jadi Tony Pua(ka) bandingkan SGPV dengan FAC(M), atau kapal yang kontrak dia 10 tahun atau lebih awal dari SGPV (diamana kos bahan mentah dah berubah), atau kapal yang kelengkapan dia lagi kurang. Sebab dia juga nak katakan yang SGPV mahal bebenor, dia misquotekan harga Littoral Combat Ship USN. Aku lupa berapa tapi dia kata LCS US lagi murah...padahal lu olang tengok aje le rega yang Dzirhan quote tu.... Bro ko x yah layan la berok2 tu...depa ni mcm parot, apa saja idola depa sebut depa main ikut sajaa...mana aada otak nk buat study atau comparison senndiri...dah jenis bodo sombong tu biarkan je Reply 18# alphawolf
So, what's the real issue again?
Mende ni dah lama dijawab, tapi nape nak diperbesarkan lagi? Kenkadang si TT saja gali cerita lama ..... kalau setakat wat modal politik kat bod CI atau bod politik dipersilakan, tapi kat bod MPSA isu ni isu yang dah lama setel.
