The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday deployed the Iron Dome anti-rocket system for the first time ever on Sunday in southern Israel.
Weeks of stepped-up rocket and mortar attacks have drawn fears of renewed war and led to new calls in Israel for the military to deploy the $200 million system.
The components of the battery – which include launchers, a radar, the control system and monitor – were each placed a few kilometers from one another on desert terrain, as soldiers from the Israel Air Force air defense unit began configuring the system.
The IDF said the system should begin operating on Sunday afternoon, but has described the step as an "operational experiment," saying the deployment of the Iron Dome and beginning its actual use will take some time.
The army said that further anti-missile batteries would be deployed at others sites in the south, but did not specify when.
The Israeli-developed system uses cameras and radar to track incoming rockets and is supposed to shoot them down within seconds of their launch.
Security officials said the new barrage of rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip and public pressure had led the military to deploy the system, which is still being fine-tuned. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss operational decisions.
IDF spokesman Capt. Barak Raz said the system was in an evaluation stage, as any new system would be. The Israel Air Force has stressed that even the first two batteries will not be enough, and that at least three more will be needed to provide ample defense from Gaza rocket attacks.
Once deployed, however, the Iron Dome still cannot provide full protection to residents of Israel's south, Home Front Minister Matan Vilnai told Army Radio on Sunday.
Palestinian militants have fired dozens of rockets at Israel over the last week, prompting Israeli air strikes against targeted areas in the Gaza Strip. The renewed hostilities have fed concerns of another large-scale Israeli military operation. In December 2008, Israel invaded Gaza in response to years of rocket and mortar barrages on its southern communities, killing 1,400 Palestinians, including more than 900 civilians, and causing widespread destruction. Thirteen Israelis also died in that war.
Israel says that Hamas, which suffered heavy losses in the fighting, has largely recovered from the fighting and restocked its arsenal with more powerful weapons. The strike came a day after Gaza groups signaled that they would halt rocket fire at Israel if the IDF stopped carrying out targeted attacks as well.

Defense Minister Ehud Barakvisited the site where the first IronDomebattery is stationed in Beersheba on Thursday. Barak admitted that the system cannot provide perfect protection from rockets but promised other batteries will be deployed in the coming years.
"Today the system commences an operational test, which is an extraordinary achievement by Israeli technology and Israel's Air Force," Barak said during the tour. He noted the Iron Dome battery was the first to intercept rockets fired at civilians.
The defense minister nevertheless admitted it was not a perfect solution to Gaza rocket fire. "It’s not a 100% solution," he said. "It would take us several years to obtain additional batteries."
The face of war is changing. In the past the enemy didn’t have the option of trying to hurt civilians. This is now the reality both during war and routine." Barak estimated that additional anti-missile systems such as "Magic Wand" and "Super Arrow" will become operational in the next 10 years. During his tour, the defense minister met soldiers stationed at the area.Air Force Commander Major General Ido Nechushtan also noted the Iron Dome could not provide absolute protection but added that the IDF is working to create multi-layered defense.

Iron dome adalah sistem jenis C-RAM bukan sama dengan Patriot atau S-300 atau Aster 30 SAMP/T. Fungsi dia adalah untuk menangkis berbagai bagai jenis roket tak berpandu dan peluru artileri. Sistem agak sama adalah sistem Phalanx SeaRaM. Tetapi, SEA-Ram mempunyai range yang lebih pendek.
A lot of these rockets can be stopped by shorads and mid-high ranged missile defence systems as well. But you do not want to use a rapier missile or Aster 30 missile to down a dumb small rocket as the rapier missile or Aster 30 missile is too expensive. Iron-dome complements other air defence systems. For example, the Jernas missile can focus on sophisticated cruise missiles or more threatening rockets and aircraft while the iron-dome focuses on dumb rockets.
Rumours....sahaja..but who knows? :P . Sg's other major air defence purchase should be to replace the 45-50km I-Hawk air defence system. Candidates include Patriots and Aster 30 SAMP/T.

Kalau baginda sebut semua senjata itu dah tentu para sahabat semua bengang terpinga-pinga. Lantak lah siapa nak beli pun. Malaysia tak kisah.
Ini 'iron dome' hanya ada sedikit kemampuan menangkis serangan kecil-kecilan pihak gerila saja. Itu pun belum terbukti lagi. Mesti ditafsirkan dulu.

Emas & air memang la penting dalam senario permusuhan & bencana alam berlaku sekaligus.
Tapi persenjataan yang akan digunakan tetap dalam bentuk paling canggih. Sebab tu la israel menawan bekalan air dinegara arab dan mempunyai simpanan emas terbesar dunia sebab mereka tahu mereka takan miskin dan kalah denganmudah dgn adanya sumber ini....
