Dr M: Let's not start an arms race

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia should not start an "arms race" with Singapore, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.
He said this when asked for his views on Singapore's plan to exhibit two of its F-16 fighters at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) 2009 exhibition in December.
Online military news portal KL Security Review recently reported, citing an unnamed source, that the Malaysian cabinet had approved the participation of Singapore's F-16s.
If the plan materialised, it would be the first time ever that Singapore displayed the F-16s at LIMA. Normally, the Malaysian government is cautious about allowing foreign military assets on its soil, the portal said.
"It's Singapore's right to exhibit its defence capability. In a way, we get to know to what extent Singapore can defend itself.
"(But) I hope you will not start an arms race, where if it has an F-16, then we must have an F-18 and so on. It's a waste of money. We're not fighting, we're not going to war with Singapore," Dr Mahathir said at a press conference here yesterday after delivering a speech at the Corporate Governance Summit.

330 exhibitors for Lima 2009
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 330 exhibitors from 24 countries will be taking part in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) 2009 in December.
Among the countries participating are Australia, South Africa, United States, Russia, Norway, Holland and Britain.
“In terms of assets, we will see 53 aircraft and 71 warships taking part, totalling 124 exhibitors of whom 65% will be foreigners,” Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abu Bakar Abdullah said at a press conference at the ministry here yesterday.
He said about 86,000 visitors are expected to flock to Lima 2009. Abu Bakar said the visitors would include delegations from 60 countries.
“A total of 168 guests of the Government have confirmed their attendance. We are still waiting for another 162 to confirm with us,” he said, adding that 54 guests have confirmed their absence from the biennial exhibition.
It is anticipated that 46,000 guests will be business visitors.
Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi witnessed the exchange ceremony of MoU between the ministry and four sponsors – Celcom (M) Berhad, Canon (M) Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia Berhad and Affin Bank Berhad – for the big event.

Anyway Ven, all shows accept fleet review akan dibuat di Mahsuri dan tidak lagi di Awana untuk segmen maritime. Fleet review masih lagi di Awana. Dulu ada plan nak buat Tall Ship Review dan disamping tu band marching di Pekan Kuah perform by crews representing ships, alih-alih tak jadi pasal tak cukup tall ship. Kalau jadi memang meerier la LIMA tahun ni. Sesiapa yang nak datang tak perlu le cari hotel...mahal beb. Tapi ada satu lagi contigency...HOMESTAY. Murah pun murah!
