Java Rockin' Land 2009

Are You Ready To Rock, Jakarta?

Japan has Fuji Rock Fest, Singapore has Singfest and Indonesia will soon have Java Rockin’land.

The rock festival is set for its debut at Carnaval Beach in Ancol, North Jakarta, from next Friday though Sunday, Aug. 7-9, with a lineup of popular local bands and a few established international groups.

The organizers, Java Festival Production, have some experience in bringing music to the people of Indonesia. After five years of promoting Java Jazz, it has helped turn it into one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world. Now Java Festival is hoping to attract 15,000 people a day to this new rock event.

Nirmala Hapsari, Java Festival’s media relations officer, says that the main difference between the two events “will be in the music presented and the ambience itself. Java Jazz festival has a more suave feel to it, while Java Rockin’land is more about letting loose and rocking out.”

Helping audience members to rock out will be international acts Third Blind Eye and Mr. Big from the United States, Bagga Bownz from the Netherlands and Mew from Denmark, as well as dozens of local bands including Andra & The Backbone; retro-pop outfit Naif, who are known for their Beatles-esque harmonies and charismatic frontman David Bayu Danangjaya, and Netral, a rock group that has been on the local scene since the 1990s.

Newly successful pop-rock act BITE will also be performing on the MRA stage, which is sponsored by the media group of the same name. Slank, perhaps Indonesia’s biggest band, will also be making an appearance. Their large nationwide fan base, known as Slankers, should help the festival to draw a big crowd.

The strong line-up aside, though, success must be judged by ticket sales, which will make the difference between Java Rockin’land taking off or crashing and burning.

Last year’s Jakarta Rock Parade failed to attract big audiences due to both the high prices of tickets and a lack of promotion.

Drummer Rullysyahbani Annash of The Brandals, who are scheduled to perform on Sunday, said, “It’s about time Indonesia had a rock festival like this. There was another one last year that completely failed, but at least someone gave it a try.”

Rullysyahbani added that “The Brandals will be playing some new songs, and hopefully our show will be as satisfying as making love to two women.”

Java Rockin’land will be an opportunity for many independent local acts to showcase their talents. Most of the artists performing will come from the independent scene, including some acts who have also enjoyed mainstream success like The Brandals.

There will also be newer groups like noise-poppers Monkey To Millionaire, spacey metal duo Ghaust and LA Lights Indiefest finalist and folk rock quartet Vox.

The independent bands will perform on the Cutting Edge stage, which is being set up by independent label Aksara Records.

David Tarigan, who is responsible for setting up the Cutting Edge stage, says legendary rock festivals like Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival were the inspiration for this arena, where “bands present another option to the regular, more conventional brands of music.”

The festival’s Web site has been online for a few months with a wish list of performers that included reunited grunge rockers Stone Temple Pilots and Australian act Silverchair. But Nirmala said, “Some bands dropped out. They’re on a break, unavailable for the dates and so forth.”

Another potential problem was the suicide bombings at two Jakarta hotels this month that led to concern that the event would be canceled. But the organizers quickly dispelled such rumors.

Nirmala said, “We are committed to holding the festival. There were some worries that it might be canceled, but fortunately, the artists that have signed up to perform at the festival have remained true to their word.”

A press release from Java Festival Production added that, “Steps of coordination with the police and city’s government have been taken to ensure the safety of the biggest rock music festival in Southeast Asia.” The statement, released on July 21, went on to say that, “Music is a way to spread the word of democracy, tolerance, harmony … and peace. Canceling a music festival, in our opinion, is like castrating the efforts to spread those messages.”

In the word’s of Slank’s lead singer, Kaka, “It’s time to rock ’n’ roll.”

Marcel Thee is the lead vocalist and guitarist of the band Sajama Cut, which is scheduled to perform at Java Rockin’land.

98 Band Tampil di Panggung Java Rockin'Land: Mulai Mr Big, Vertical Horizon, sampai Slank

JAKARTA - Vakum selama tujuh tahun, grup Mr Big memilih mengadakan reuni Februari lalu.

Band ternama seperti Slank, Gigi, Superman is Dead, Naif, J Rocks, Andra & The Backbone, /rif, dan banyak lagi akan tampil.

Salah satunya White Shoes n The Couples Company. "Kami sengaja supaya tidak terlalu seragam. Kalau seragam, kayaknya gelap," ucapnya.

Peter F. Gontha selaku direktur utama Java Festival Production mengatakan, sampai kemarin tiket yang terjual untuk acara itu mencapai 32 ribu lembar. Penjualan tiket terus digenjot hingga hari pertama festival berlangsung.

Pemerintah juga ingin menunjukkan bahwa life must go on.

Sang vokalis Slank, Kaka, mengangguk setuju. Menurut dia, festival musik rock di Indonesia sangat kurang. "Slank sudah lama nggak ngerock. Belakangan ini kurang rock. It's time to rock!" tegas dia penuh semangat.
