Labah-labah tarantula diancampupus

- BERNAMA

Species unique to Fraser抯 Hill

THE spider genus Coremiocnemis sp is unique to Fraser抯 Hill and cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

The tarantula grows to about 15cm, has bright golden upper legs, dark blue lower legs and a painful bite.

Distinctively, its two main back legs are covered with thick hair.

Extensive research has yet to be carried out on the species but it is known that the female can live for more than 20 years while the male dies after reaching sexual maturity at around five years old.

Tarantulas live exclusively in earthen embankments creating earthen burrows of a metre or more deep into the soil that ends in a round chamber.

LIVING FOSSIL: The tarantula grows to about 15cm, has bright golden upper legs, dark blue lower legs and a painful bite.

The females live there for the rest of their natural lives, venturing outside to feed only under the cover of darkness.

They breed once a year, generally after the wet season, and always before moulting. Moulting enables the spider to cast off its old exoskeleton skin, grow more and reveal its true colours.

Once the moult is complete and the new skeleton or shell hardens, the spiders are ready to mate.

During the mating process, it is not uncommon for the males to be killed and eaten by the females. But the male who escapes will die naturally, anyway, two to three months after the mating.

Six weeks after mating, the female will produce an egg ball with 200-300 eggs. She will watch vigilantly over them until they hatch after 18 weeks.

Once they hatch, the little spiders will remain in the burrow for a while before striking out on their own into a perilous world where they are often preyed on by, among others, ants, snakes and even adult spiders.

Most of them die. Only about 5% of the hatchlings from 300 eggs will live to see adulthood and less than 1% will live past 10 years of age.

Tarantula under threat
BY TEOH TEIK HOONG

PETALING JAYA: Demand from international spider collectors and local ignorance are killing a unique species of tarantula in Fraser's Hill.

A trap-door spider called Liphistius malayanus, which has remained ecologically unchanged since the dinosaur era, literally making it a living fossil, is found only at the hill resort and nowhere else in the world.

Its survival is now under threat.

揟he trade in exotic Malaysian species is on the rise overseas with this particular tarantula being advertised for sale in the United States. Baby tarantulas are being offered for US$60 (RM228) each,
