Grey skies? It's not the haze, says NEA

SINGAPOREANS woke up to hazy skies on Thursday, and the air quality index hit 53 - still in the moderate range, but the third worst reading of the year.
High-rise buildings in housing estates from Bishan to Sengkang were shrouded in grey, as was the downtown skyline.
But while the air quality on Thursday was the poorest since fires in Indonesia sent clouds of ash this way in February, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the grey shroud was 'not haze'.
Its spokesman attributed the cloud to 'the poor dispersion of particulate matter', but did not elaborate.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency website, particulate matter is a mixture of extremely small particles and drops of liquid. It can include acids, organic chemicals, metals and tiny dust particles.
However, smoke haze is also caused by particulate matter, and one Singaporean said the effects sure felt the same to her.
'My eyes told me a different story,' said executive Xiao Lixian, when told the NEA said that haze was not responsible for the grey shroud.
'They were tearing badly this morning and I sneezed continuously. How can it not be haze?' asked the 30-year-old.
The Indonesian meteorological service reported recently that burning had started and hundreds of hot spots have appeared in Kalimantan and the Riau Islands.
This year's worst air quality was recorded in February. On Feb 16, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reached 54 and on Feb 24, it hit a high of 56.
At the same time, it was reported that farmers in the Sumatran province of Riau had begun clearing undergrowth by setting it alight earlier than usual. June 5, 2008

SINGAPOREANS in many parts of the island woke up to a hazy morning on Thursday.
A grey misty shroud blanketed highrise buildings, recalling the days of the dreaded haze.
Said a spokeman for the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Thursday afternoon: 'The slight haziness this morning is attributed to the poor dispersion of particulate matter in the air under light wind conditions.
'The situation may improve later in the day as the temperature rises and the winds strengthen.'
The air quality was rated good as at 4 pm on Wednesday, according to the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading on the NEA website.
Burning in Indonesia has started and many hotspots have appeared in Kalimantan and the Riau islands. at the moment...hujan :) lately cuaca sejuk... hujan... and mendung... the sun is up again... cerah and panas :L hujan lebat sini... syoknya kalau still ada dalam blanket... area jurong sekarang..... renyai-renyai...

SINGAPORE : The Meteorological Service said more thundery showers are expected in Singapore over the next three days, due to the Southwest monsoon season.
The chief features of the Southwest monsoon season is the incidence of morning squalls known as "Sumatras", which occur annually from June to September. It is characterised by widespread showers and gusty winds, usually affecting Singapore in the pre-dawn hours and early morning.
Singaporeans can also expect frequent showers in the late morning and afternoons. The Meteorological Service added that rainfall for the first fortnight of June is likely to be well above the norm for most parts of Singapore. - CNA /ls cuaca di luar opis - panas terik....
