>> Download IPB Installation Guide in PDF format <<

Invision Power Board Installation

Before you can actually start using IPB forum, you need to spare some time with the installation process which is pretty straight-forward. IPB forum can be installed with the help of CPanel and the tools, provided by Invision Power Services.

The first thing you should do is upload the archived installation files to the server. The best way to do this is to use an FTP client like FileZilla and SmartFTP.

Invision Power Board Installation Process: Step by step

[*]Extract the IPB files on your local computer and upload them on your hosting account using FTP. Please, make sure that they show in the directory in which you'd like to install the forum.[*]Create the database. IPB needs one MySQL database in order to function properly. Prior to installing the IPB software you need to create the database. Go to your Cpanel and click on the MySQL icon:http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/1-create_db1.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/2-create_db2.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/3-create_db3.jpg

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/4-create_db4.jpg
[*]Open your browser and navigate to the directory with the installation files. The address bar should read something similar to this : http://your-domain-name.com/forum/install/http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/5-browser1.jpg
[*]Fill in the required database information with the data of the newly created database:http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/6-browser2.jpg
[*]In the final step of the installation process you will be automatically redirected through a series of screens. On the last one you should click on CLICK HERE TO LOG IN! in order to go to the admin area of the forum.Well done! You have successfully installed you IPB forum software!

Invision Power Board Configuration

The first thing you would like do after installing the forum is to perform some fine-tuning. We will deal with it in this tutorial section.

This is the basic looks of the admin panel. It might slightly differ from version to version but its functions remain the same:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/7-admin.jpg

Configure Email Functions in IPB

The first thing you can do is to configure the email functions of the board. This can be done from Tools & Settings -> Email setup (in the right frame window). You must use SMTP authentication method and to have a valid email box under your domain name hosted by SiteGround. The configuration must resemble the following:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/8-emailSettings.jpg

Customize Date & Time Formats in IPB

The next thing you would want to customize is the Date & Time formats and time offset. The server time cannot be changed, it is -5 GMT, however, IPB gives you the ability to set time offset. Once in the Tools & Options tab, right above Email setup click on Date & Time Format. Click on "Native Server Time Zone" dropdown box and select the correct time offset that corresponds to your time zone.

General Configuration and Meta Info

Next in the list of adjustable settings is the "General Configuration" right below Email setup in Tools & Options tab. The things that you'd like to adjust here are - Board Name, Website Name, Website Address - those are self explanatory, the important thing here is not to end with a trailing slash "/"any of the URLs or paths to directories. The rest of the settings can be left by default. Click on Update Settings at the bottom of the page when done. Next important settings are the User profiles. There are a few things you would like to change here
[*]Allow HTML in signatures? - set to No as to avoid unsolicited ad messages[*]Allow BBCode in signatures - BBCode is important part of every board and it's a good idea to have it enabled; set to Yes.[*]Auto prune all topic subscriptions if the topic has no replies over days - you might want to set a number of days after which unanswered messages will be deleted from the board. It's a good idea to keep the database clean from junk data that might slow down the forum. The rest of the settings available under "Tools & Options" are self explanatory, however if you need detailed description of any of the other features, please contact our support team who will gladly provide you with more information.

Templates and skins in IPB

The Look & Feel tab in the admin panel allows you to fully customize your Invision forum. Skins must be chosen depending on your IPB version number. There are plenty of web sites on the Internet that provide free and paid skins / templates for Invision Power Boards. To name a few:

Invisionize.com
IPBSkinworks.com
Jasidog.com

Invisionize.com is probably the best place you can search for templates, skins, modules, etc.

The installation of a chosen IPB template requires a few steps.

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/9-skin1.jpg
[*]Click on Skin Import/Export and scroll down the page. "Importing..." section will allow you to import downloaded templates. For that purpose, you need to de-compress the files to your computer first. The folder with the de-compressed files will contain 2 important files that you need:http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/10-skin2.jpg
[*]Import ipb_images-listed-images.xml.gz under "Import Skin Images" section and ipb_skin-listed.xml.gz under "Import Skin Templates". File names may vary but the point here is to make sure that you are uploading .xml.* files.[*]After you are done importing the files, click on Skin Tools -> Rebuild Skin Set Cache to rebuild the cache of the new template.[*]Go to Skin Manager and select the newly installed skin:http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/11-skin3.jpg

Emoticons and Smilies in IPB

Emoticons are symbols that use computer characters to convey emotion or tone in an electronic message. IPB gives you the ability to pre-define them in the admin control panel:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/12-emotion1.jpg

Just select the ones you would like to be used in your forum and click on "Update Emoticons":

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/13-emotion2.jpg

Avatars in Invision Power Board

An avatar is a graphical image of a user intended to make the network environment closer to reality. Avatars and photos' characteristics can be set from the admincp -> Tools & Settings tab -> User profiles

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/14-avatar1.jpg

The default settings should do fine for most of the forums but if you would like to personalize them you can do it in the User profiles section:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/15-avatar2.jpg

It allows to set permissions for image file extensions, Hot-linking (Allow users to use remote URL avatars) which is not a very good idea as some web site have this disabled and hot-linking directly to them will result in inability to display the image, maximum image size, etc.

Inserting emoticons can be done when posting to an existing topics or opening a new one. Once configured, the option will show the available faces (emoticon) in the user panel:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/16-emotion3.jpg

Once logged in you can change your Avatar settings from "Edit Avatar Settings" on the main screen:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u36/able444/17-avatar3.jpg

Semoga berjaya.
