Understanding The Gospel of Matthew

sources: What Jesus is all about - Dr Henrietta C. Mears

Understanding the Gospel (the glad story of salvation through Jesus Christ)

There are 4 gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). But why 4 Gospel? wouldnt 1 account have been simpler and clearer? wouldnt it saved uf from some o th difficuliies in what some said are conflicting accounts?
1 or 2 accounts would not have been given us a sufficient portrayal of the life of Christ!

There are four distinct offices of Christ portrayed of the life of crist in th Gospel. He is presented as;
[*]King (in Matthew) - written to the Jew
[*]Servant (in Mark) - Written to the Romans
[*] Son of man (in Luke) - written to the Greeks
[*]Son of God (in John) - written to All who will believe

each of the four gospel has much in common with each others, each one deals;
[*]Christ earthly ministry
[*]Christ death and ressurection
[*]Christ teaching and miracels

Each writers is trying to presents a different picture of Christ

The King Christ Jesus

Matthew presents Jesus as king. This Gospel was written to the Jew, because Christ is the Son of David. His royal genealogy listed in Matthew 1:1-7. In Matthew 5-7 the sermon on the mountain have the manifesto of the King, which contains the law of His kingdom.
Fulfilled Old Testament Prophecies on the King Jesus Christ

[*] 2 Samuel 7:13-14

*grins*.. and you know what's even more wonderful about this? These four offices of Christ has even been prophecied years before Jesus came into this world, back in the Old Testament.. two by Isaiah, and two by Zechariah... and if you are using the KJV, you will notice that all are spoken in a similar manner.. BEHOLD...

Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: Behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Isaiah 52:13
Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

Zechariah 6:12
And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:

Isaiah 40:9
O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

Amen.

Beautiful, ain't it?

okay.. sorry for interrupting.. please go on posting.. :)

The Servant Christ Jesus

Mark presents Jesus as servant. This Gospel was written to the Romans; and there is no genealogy. Why? People are not interested in the genealogy of a servant. More miracles are found here than in any other Gospel. The Romans cared little for words and far more for deeds.

[*]Isaiah 42:1-7; 52:13-15; 53

The Man Christ Jesus

Luke set forth Jesus as the perfect man. This gospel written to the Greeks and tell Jesus? genealogy goes back to Adam. As a perfect man, Jesus is seen much in prayer and angels who minister to him.

[*] He is called Immanuel? (God with us) - see 2 Samuel 7:14-16
[*] The Offspring - who would defeat Satan - see Genesis 3:15
[*] Bring blessing and salvation to all nations - see Genesis 22:18
[*] Establish an everlasting kingdom - see 2 Samuel 7:14-16

Additional verses that reflect the Son of Man
[*] see Psalm 8:4 (compare this to see Hebrews 2:5-9)
[*]see Daniel 7:13

Don't really know whether to post this here, or under the "Jesus Christ - Lets Share About HiM! " thread. I guess, I'll post it here.. since this is more of a "Jesus in the Bible" thread - the other one is more for personal sharing.

This is not directly related to casejulia's Four Offices of Christ..but it is an interesting link about messianic prophecies.. Tells of how OT prophecies are fulfilled in the NT. It gives the verse references too..
(well, perhaps it is indirectlyrelated though.. cos it just shows that Jesus is the Son of God!)

The God-Man

John portrays Jesus as the Son of God. Written to all who will believe with the purpose of leading people to Christ (see John 20:31). Everything in this Gospel illustrates and demonstrates His divine relationship. The opening verse carries us back to the beginning of creation;

[*] see Isaiah 9:6; 40:3-5
[*] see Jeremiah 23:6

What types of people today are like the people in Jesus' day?

Jewish - Matthew wrote especially for the Jewish

-Jewish people had special training
-They were stepped in the Old Testament Scripture and the prophets
-If Jewish people need to be impressed with Jesus, they would need to be taught by someone who understand their customs and way of thinking
-Jewish people needed to know that Jesus came to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament
-over and over again we read 'And so was fulfilled what the Lord said through the prophets" (see Matthew 2:15)

[*]The Jewish of Jesus' day were like
-today's people who revel in prophecies fulfilled and unfulfilled
-they seek to know what the prophets spoke and how the prophecies were brought to pass

What types of people today are like the people in Jesus' day?

Romans - Mark wrote especially for the Romans

-Romans are master of the world that time
-the Romans knew nothing about the Old Testament scripture
-they were not interested in prophecies being fulfilled, yet they were concerned about a remarkable leader who had appeared in Palestine-Jesus
-Jesus claimed more than ordinary authority and possessed extraordinary powers
-the Romans liked Mark's straightforward message.
-to advance the story rapidly, the word "and" is used in Mark 1,375 times (KJV)
-Mark's Gospel moves on in a beauty and force all its own
-it is full with deeds, not words

[*]The Romans of Jesus' day were like;
-today's average business people
-men and women in the market place are not concerned about the genealogy of king but with a God who is able and who can meet a person every need

-Zechariah burst into praise when speech was restored to him (see Luke 20:1-68-79)
-at Jesus' birth, a chorus of angel voices rang out (see Luke 2:13-14)
-the shepherd's song of praise to God was herd (see Luke 2:20)

UNDERSTANDING MATTHEW

-his Gospel showed the Jews that Jesus is their long expected Messiah, the Son of David
-the purpose is stated in Matthew 1:1 "A record of genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham"
-this statement links with 2 of the great covenant with
I. David - a promised of a king to sit upon his throne forever (see 2 Sammuel 7:8-13)
II. Abraham - a promised that through him all families of the earth would be blessed (see Genesis 12:3)

-David's son was a king. Abraham's son was a sacrifice
-Matthew open with the birth of a King and closes with the offering sacrifice
-Matthew convinces the Jewish that in the person and kingdom of Jesus, God fulfilled every prophecy spoken concerning their promised Messiah;
(29 quotations from the Old Testament-more than any of the evangelists)
(13 times he said "to fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet")
-Matthew shows the Jewish believers in Jesus that they were not giving up their old faith but rather accepting it fulfillment in Jesus

Jesus Revealed

Matthew break the silence of 400 years between Malachi's prophecy-in the last book of the Old Testament-and the announcement of the Birth if Jesus
At that time, Israel was under the domination of the Roman Empire. No man of the house of David had been allowed to sit upon the throne for 600 years

Herod was not the true king of Israel; he was a governor of the Judea, appointed by the emperor of Rome. The man who really had the right to the throne of the house of David was Joseph, a carpenter who become the husband of Marry(see the genealogy of Joseph in Matthew 1:11 and notice one name, Jeconiah)

If Joseph had been the Jesus' father according to the flesh, Jesus could never have occupied the throne, for God? Word barred the way. There had been a curse on this royal line since the day of Jeconiah. In Jeremiah 22:30 we read;

This is what the LORD says: "Record this man as if childless, a man who will not prosper in this lifetime, for none of his offspring will prosper, none will sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah"

Joseph was in the line of curse. If Christ had been Joseph's son, He could not have sat on David's throne
We find another genealogy in Luke 3. this is Mary's line back to David through Nathan, not Jeconiah (see Luke 3:31). There was no curse on this line. To Mary God said:

Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and gave birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of is father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, his kingdom will never end (Luke 1:30-31)

Coming of The King (Matthew 1-2)

-Jesus of Nazareth is the predicted Messiah, the deliverer whom Moses and the prophet wrote:
Whose origins are from of old, from ancient times (Mic 5:2)

-He is the child that was born, the son given, of whom Isaiah speaks:
Wonderful counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting father, Prince of Peace(see Isaiah 9:6)
-Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea (see Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1), in the day of Herod the king.

-The Gospel does not begin 'with once upon a time', it start with 'Bethlehem in Judea' (Mat 2:1). The town is real!
-And the time is definite: 'during the time of King Herod' (Mat 2:1). History know Herod.
-These are the fact that no critic or unbeliever can doubt

grins.. yes.. Herod is real not only in the Bible, but in secular history as well. But who is tis Herod, actually?

Just a bit to share about Herod:
In secular history, he is known as "Herod the Great". His family was nominaly Jewish, but actually Idumean (or Edomite, as known in the OT days). (Now - refer back to Genesis 36 - who are the Edomites? The father of the Edomites is Esau - the son of Isaac. And that means, Herod, being an Idumean (Edomite)was a descendant of Esau.

How do we know that Herod is an Idumean? Well, history has it that, Antipater (the govenor of Idumaea as well as a descndant of Esau)with two other neighbouring kings, attacked Jeruselum who to try to overthrow the high priest at that time. But the battle raged so fiercely, and they sought a Roman general, Pompey, to come and intervene, but Pompey came and overthrew the city and captured it for Rome instead. That was in 63 B.C. From that time on, Palestine was under the authority and power of Rome.

The Romans made Antipater procurater of Judaea, and his two sons kings of Galilee and Judaea. The son who became the king of Judaea is Herod.

So go check history, find out when Pompey lived, find out when Caesar ruled, find out when Herod ruled.. and you'll get an idea of the timeline in history when Jesus is born.. :)

Now, give you a few interesting bits about the book of Matthew:

As casejulia said, Matthew portrays Jesus as the King. He is King of the Jews, as well as the Sovereign King.

1) Not only it traces the genealogy to King David, but it also emphasizes the place of His birth - Bethlehem. If you refer back to the 1 Samuel chapter 16, you'll find that Bethlehem is the home of David.

2) Seven times in this Gospel, it mentions Christ as 'the Son of David'.
(Matthew 1:1, 9:27, 12:23, 15:22, 20:30, 21:9, 22:42)

3) Matthew is the only gospel where Christ speaks of 'the throne of His glory'
(Matthew 19:28, 25:31)

4) Matthew is the only gospel where Jerusalem is referred to 'the holy city' and 'the city of the great King'
(Matthew 4:5, 5:35)

5) In Matthew, the word 'kingdom' appears more than 50 times, and the expression 'kingdom of heaven' appears more than 30 times..

Now, isn't it truly the gospel of the King?
