Dari segi perubatan, sindrom patah hati ini memang benar-benar berlaku dan berkaitan dengan kesihatan jantung.
Berdasarkan tulisan Dr Latif Saad dalam portal The Diagnosa, sindrom patah hati atau dikenali sebagai Takotsubo syndrome ini boleh berpunca daripada tekanan besar dalam hidup, putus cinta dan trauma kehilangan orang yang tersayang.

Ia boleh berlaku kepada semua golongan terutama wanita dan mereka yang mengalami tekanan hidup yang sangat teruk sehingga menyebabkan badan menghasilkan hormon adrenaline yang menjadikan jantung dipam lebih kuat. Akibatnya, jantung sebelah kiri jadi membesar.
Simptom penyakit ini sama seperti serangan sakit jantung iaitu sesak nafas dan sakit dada tetapi belum sampai tahap membunuh. Ia masih boleh dirawat dan sembuh dalam masa beberapa minggu.
Lapor portal Insider, nyawa pesakit sindrom patah hati ini menjadi terancam sekiranya berlaku kegagalan jantung berfungsi, tekanan darah rendah, kejutan dan degupan jantung yang tidak normal.

Sindrom takotsubo
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy,
also known as broken heart syndrome,
is a condition where your heart muscle becomes suddenly weakened,
usually because of severe emotional or physical stress.
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is usually triggered by extreme emotional or physical stress.
It causes the left ventricle of your heart (the main blood plumping chamber),
to change shape and get larger.
This weakens the heart muscle and means it doesn't pump blood as well as it should.
Sindrom takotsubo ;PThe word ‘takotsubo’ comes from
the name for a a pot used by Japanese fishermen to trap octopuses.
When the left ventricle of the heart changes shape,
it develops a narrow neck and
a round bottom making it looks similar to the octopus trap.
It can develop at any age,
but typically affects more women than men.

a reversible abnormality characteristic of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
During systole (cardiac contraction) the midsection
and tip (apex) of the left ventricle balloon out,
while the area above, called the base, contracts normally.
The shape is similar to that of a tako-tsubo (),
a round-bottomed, narrow-necked vessel used to catch octopuses.
