What MCU Movie Will Robert Downey Jr. Be in Next?

It’s not a stretch to say Robert Downey Jr. is the most respected actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was the one who started this whole thing with Iron Man in 2008. He was the first of the key Avengers actors to be an Oscar nominee, and his once disastrous personal life had the most dramatic arc.

However, if you’re pining to see Downey again after Endgame, all you may be able to do is pine. If you haven’t seen Endgame yet, we recommend coming back to this article when you do, so spoiler alert.

Here’s what the future holds for Tony Stark in Marvel.

No Tony Stark After ‘Endgame’

Marvel’s megahit of megahits makes it very clear Tony Stark will not be back. Yes, everybody who turned to dust at the end of Infinity War came back, but a similar resurrection for Downey is not likely unless Marvel gets so creative as to be silly. That would severely undermine a very emotional sendoff that brought the whole gang back to pay their last respects.

Of course, Marvel could always do the flashback thing. If you’ve seen the trailer for the new Spider-Man movie coming out in July, Tony Stark figures heavily in that, in spirit if not in body. Stark had been a mentor/father figure to Peter Parker, who takes his absence very hard.

And there’s another really simple way to tell. If you look at Downey’s IMDB credits, there is nothing by Marvel listed for the future.

No Downey in Marvel’s upcoming movies, either.

So at this point, unless Marvel pulls some serious voodoo, with Doctor Strange playing the necromancer, we have seen the last of Robert Downey Jr. in these movies. That will make his complete list of MCU movies Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk (cameo), Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Iron Man may be gone, but the Marvel train will certainly keep chugging along without him. The only thing is, at this time, it’s difficult to know what the cars in that train will contain.

In other words, the list of upcoming Marvel movies is about as clear as mud. No two lists are the same. Disney CEO Robert Iger has said the MCU slate will be announced later this summer, but for now, it’s mostly guesswork.

We can count on a Black Widow movie, even though Natasha sacrificed herself in Endgame, so in all likelihood, said movie will be a prequel. We know there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 because of writer-director James Gunn returning to the film after his controversial exit.

There are bound to be sequels to Captain Marvel and Black Panther, because Disney and Marvel won’t leave all that money on the table. We just don’t know when those movies will be out in theaters yet.

Downey made a big mark

Since Downey’s return to Marvel is highly improbable, his presence will be sorely missed. Tony Stark’s arc was not unlike Downey’s own.

Just as we saw Tony Stark have an early triumph, a life-changing crisis in the desert, and an ultimate redemption, we saw Downey having an Oscar nomination in the early ’90s, a life-changing crisis with multiple drug busts, and a career rejuvenation thanks largely to Marvel.

“Iron Man is kind of a definitive — something so possibly two-dimensional and vapid and pointless in the bigger scope of life — but it points to a dividing line between me being identified as one thing which I’ll always be and me being identified as another thing which I’ll always be,” Downey told Esquire in 2007. And that was before the movie came out.

You may have heard there was no end credits scene at the end of Endgame, but there is a nice tribute to Downey at the very end.As the music fades away, we hear the sound of metal clanking – and that’s probably the sound of Tony putting together the Iron Man suit in the desert. Both Tony and Downey came a long way.
