As San Diego Comic-Con 2017 kicks off, Marvel fans are excited to see what new reveals and footage Marvel Studios will be bringing to the convention. Of course, of all the films in Marvel's lineup that fans want to see, none is more anticipated than Avengers: Infinity War.
The big MCU crossover event that is Avengers 3 has already made a big impression, as first footage from the film was revealed during the D23 Expo this past weekend. As we learn more and more details of the film (like the reveal of Thanos' henchmen, The Black Order), the nature of the Infinity War's story is starting to come into focus. In new interview with Variety, Avengers: Infinity War directors The Russo Brothers commented on where the film's story will take fans - and what the overarching point of it is.
According to The Russos, their previous MCU films (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War) were distinctly politically minded - but Avengers: Infinity War will be dealing with themes on a much bigger level. According to Anthony Russo:
"You’ll find that INFINITY WAR and the still untitled Avengers movie deal with much larger issues. They move beyond the politics. Those stories were specifically about Captain America, and he’s a guy that wears a flag on his shield. We can’t help but address current American issues with him. INFINITY WAR deals with much deeper, more universal and more profound themes of fate and destiny and the essence of what it means to be a hero."
That quote makes it sound like Avengers: Infinity War will be much more of a quintessential superhero story, with the archetypal "good vs. evil" thematic arc. However, reading between the lines, there's a darker undertone to what the Russo Brothers don't say in that quote.
In their description of "fate," "destiny," and 'the essence of being a hero,' The Russos are arguably implying that the nature of heroicsacrifice will be a part of Infinity War's story. Marvel fans have long suspected that some (or many) of the original Avengers will have to lay down their lives to save the universe from Thanos - and that idea has remained very much in play, throughout every statement and interview about the film.
