Plot
The story begins with Alizeh (Anushka Sharma), an affluent Pakistani princess and an aspiring musician and writer, falling in love with her college sweetheart Ali (Fawad Khan), an aspiring DJ. They confess their love and desire for marriage to Alizeh's parents, however due to an adamant father (Kaushal Kapoor), worried about the class differences and a tragic situation in her family, Alizeh is forced to break things off with her lover Ali. With a broken heart and great anger, Alizeh moves to London without informing her family. She meets Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) who is an aspiring singer at a music festival in London, from India who has been living there for 10 years. They instantly become friends and connect over their love for books, music and Bollywood. The two decide to take a Euro Trip inspired by previous Bollywood movies such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Silsila. The trip takes them through romantic locals of UK, Paris, Switzerland and Austria. In a whirl wind of emotions, they end up becoming best friends and decide to move in together upon coming back to London. While living together, Ayan starts falling in love with Alizeh and is devastated to discover that she is spoken for and is already in love with Ali. Alizeh returns home to Pakistan after discovering Ali has been in a traumatic accident. Ayan in an adventurous self discovery trip during which time he meets a gorgeous poetess, Saba Ali Khan (Aishwariya Rai) at a short meeting in the airport, decides to help Alizeh convince her family to marry Ali. Ali and Alizeh decides to get married after being encouraged by a heartbroken Ayan who visits them in Pakistan to help initiate their marriage. At a heartfelt meeting during the wedding day, Ayan confesses his love for Alizeh, however, encourages her to choose Ali and leaves for London.
The story shifts after a five year jump to show a bearded Ayan being still in love with Alizeh and managing to get a record deal for a famous Indian record label. During this time he comes across Saba, the poetess, once again and continues to spend time with her in order to get inspired for creating his music. Their relationship soon gets deeper and Ayan discovers, Saba has previously lost her husband (Shahrukh Khan) to cancer and was ousted from her home because of being an illegitimate child. They continue their fling finding comfort amongst each other, when fate brought, Ayan and Alizeh face to face at another music festival in Austria. The story shifts to Alizeh's past, her quarrels with Ali because of financial problems and her confession of love to Ayan. However, being completely torn between Alizeh and Saba, Ayan realizes that he is still in love with Alizeh but cannot leave Saba. In an intense meeting between the three main characters it is learned that Saba and Alizeh were half sisters as Saba was the illegitimate child of her father. The story ends with Alizeh and Ali fixing their personal relationship and Saba going back to her home in Pakistan while Ayan, remains alone in his home in London in a powerful stance of unrequited love that can be complete. The story is said to be inspired by the director, Karan Johar's actual life.

Ada gak speku film ni ala2 film Ranbir yg lama tu... Rockstar... sbb dlm film Rockstar pun watak Ranbir jd penyanyi gak... pastu... eh jap... ni spoiler alert utk sape2 yg blum penah layan film Rockstar --->
Watak Ranbir yg bercita2 jadi penyanyi rock, jatuh cinta dgn pempuan 1 kolej yg memula x layan heols... pempuan tu pun Muslim, dari Kashmir. Pempuan tu ekceli dh nk kawin dgn lelaki pilihan kuarga. Ranbir akhirnya terima dgn hari terbuka & theyols jadi kawan baik jah.. siap gi ikut pempuan tu balik kampung kat Kashmir utk attend kenduri kawin tu.
After few years Ranbir jadi penyanyi rock terkenal & digilai ramai walopun perangai heols teruk... sbb heols, mengalami depression lps pempuan tu kawin... tp disbbkan depression ni la juga menyebabkan Ranbir berjaya jd penyanyi rock tu. Tp at the same time heols ada kes polis sbb pukul org, sampai masuk penjara.
Bila dh kuar penjara, ntah camne ms nk buat konsert kat London heols terserempak dgn pompuan tu lg... theyols melepak sama2 & Ranbir still x bleh nk move on... and pompuan tu pun baru sedar yg sheols x bahagia pun dgn perkahwinan tu. Last2 baru dpt tau pempuan tu sakit & tgh dying. Tp sejak bremu semula dgn Ranbir, sheols mcm ada semangat baru utk terus hidup. Ms ni Ranbir nekad utk dptkan pompuan tu walopun tau sheols masih ada suami. So diaorg secretly ada affair.
Last2 percintaan diaorg dpt dihidu kuarga pompuan tu & hasben pompuan tu terus ceraikan pompuan tu. And kemuncaknya pompuan tu tetiba jatuh sakit semula, kali ni agak teruk sampai koma.. and doktor sahkan sbb sheols peknen anak Ranbir. Pritam reveals how Ae Dil Hai Mushkil title track got into Bajrangi Bhaijaan!
Even as the title song of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is topping the charts, composer Pritam Chakraborty reveals he had initially composed two options for the track, one of which was eventually used in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
The title song of the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer is crooned by Arijit Singh and penned by lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya. Pritam says apart from the title track, which was finally selected for the film, he had composed another song which went on to become “Tu Jo Mila” from last year’s blockbuster starring superstar Salman Khan.
“I had composed two options for the title track. One is the same title track ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, as you hear it now. Since the choice was made, the other track I used it in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.
“So, if you take ‘Kyunki tu dhadkan main dil’ you can easily put it as ‘Kyunki ae dil hai mushkil’. So, I had composed that song as an option for ‘Ae Dil…’,” Pritam told PTI in an interview.
“Later, when this came in (ADHM title track), that song became ‘Tu jo mila’ and it was going immensely well in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’,” he said. The upcoming romantic-drama also stars Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan.
There are reports that Ranbir plays a singer in the film. When asked if the actor will be crooning a song, Pritam said, “Ranbir will not be singing a song for the sound track. Nothing like that is decided. He is such a good actor that when he performs, it looks like he is singing the song.”
The composer was lavish in his praise for Ranbir, for whom he has previously given chartbusters like “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”, “Barfi!” and “Azab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”. “I think Ranbir is simply exceptional in the song (‘ADHM’). The entire first ‘mukhda’ of the song is just held on his eyes. He is singing and the entire expression, the mood of the song is perfectly reflected through his eyes.”
“I messaged Ranbir multiple times saying that in my life I haven’t worked with an actor like him and that his talent is unparallelled. It is really brilliant for an actor to be able to hold a song for nearly 45 seconds, carry forward a full mukhda in one shot and express the entire emotion just through the eyes,” Pritam said.
“Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” marks the return of Karan Johar to direction after his 2012 hit “Student of the Year”. The 45-year-old “Dilwale” hitmaker said though one doesn’t associate “intense” songs with a Johar film, “Ae Dil…” demanded that kind of mood.
“The film is about unrequited love, so songs actually depend upon the situation, characters. Though we don’t generally associate pure romantic melodies with Karan, this movie is much more intense.”
Pritam said the album, to be out by September end, will have seven tracks and is a “mixed bag of intense, romantic songs and fun songs.”
